50 km Ultramarathon in Thailand: Heat, Electrolytes, Injury Management and Race Strategy

While the race report focuses on the event itself, this post explains the
practical foundation required to finish an ultramarathon in tropical conditions.
If you are preparing for a loop-based ultra, a self-supported race, or long-distance running in heat and humidity,
this article provides the underlying strategy.
Race Context
- Distance: 50 km
- Course: ~4.4 km loop
- Start time: 05:00
- Climate: tropical heat and humidity
- Body weight: 72 kg
- Main limiting factor: recurring calf cramps
- Training status: limited due to chronic calf injury
Electrolytes for Ultramarathons in Tropical Climate
Sodium (Na)
Sodium is the single most important electrolyte when running in hot and humid conditions.
Most sweat-related performance problems are sodium-related.
- Regulates fluid balance
- Prevents hyponatremia
- Strongly linked to cramp prevention
Easy sources in Thailand: salt, isotonic drinks (Pocari Sweat, Gatorade),
salted peanuts, seaweed snacks.
Potassium (K)
Supports muscle contraction and nerve signaling.
Sources: bananas, coconut water, potatoes, avocado.
Magnesium (Mg)
Important for muscle relaxation and recovery, but not an acute cramp solution during races.
Sources: nuts, oats, dark chocolate, magnesium supplements.
Calcium (Ca)
Essential for muscle contraction and neuromuscular signaling.
Sources: yogurt, tofu, sesame, leafy greens.
DIY Nutrition for a Self-Supported Ultra
Energy Bars (Heat-Stable)
- Oats
- Roasted peanuts
- Coconut oil
- Peanut butter
- Honey or palm sugar
- Pinch of salt
Race intake: approx. half a bar per loop (~4.4 km), always combined with fluids.
Homemade Energy Gel
- Banana
- Honey
- Pinch of salt
- Coconut water
Race intake: every 30–40 minutes with water.
Homemade Electrolyte Drink
- 1 liter water
- ¼ tsp salt
- Lime juice
- Honey or sugar
- Optional: coconut water
Target intake: 500–700 ml per hour.
Pacing Strategy on a Loop Course
- Conservative start: 7:15–7:30 min/km
- Gradual adjustments only after several loops
- No sudden accelerations
Aid Station Routine
- 30–60 seconds per loop
- Drink, eat, quick calf check
- Avoid long sitting breaks
Cramp Prevention in Hot Ultramarathons
Muscle cramps are usually caused by a combination of
neuromuscular fatigue and sodium loss,
not magnesium deficiency alone.
- Early and consistent sodium intake
- Continuous carbohydrate supply
- Conservative pacing
- Immediate slowing at first cramp signals
Managing a Chronic Calf Injury While Running
Why Calf Injuries Often Fail to Heal
Micro-damage → continued running → weak scar tissue → reinjury.
Heat and dehydration further slow healing.
Effective Rehabilitation Principles
- Isometric calf holds
- Eccentric heel drops
- Compression
- Protein intake: 1.6–2.2 g/kg bodyweight
- Collagen + vitamin C before rehab sessions
Complete rest or aggressive stretching delays recovery.
Equipment Lesson: Repairability Matters
After my COROS Apex Pro failed due to a broken crown and was declared
non-repairable by the manufacturer, one lesson became clear:
Repairability is not a marketing feature – it is real usability.
My still-functioning Garmin 920XT is a practical counterexample.

Finishing an ultramarathon in Thailand is not about peak fitness.
It is about systems:
