Thai Driver’s License Guide – Step-by-Step (Motorcycle & Car)
If you live in Thailand and want to ride legally, you need a Thai driver’s license. Below is a practical walkthrough of the full process at the Department of Land Transport (DLT), including physical tests, theory day, and practical driving test.
Arrival at the DLT Office
- Check your documents at the entrance.
- Receive a queue number.
- Wait in the classroom for the physical tests.
Physical Tests (By Number Order)
The staff will call numbers in sequence. The physical tests include:
- Color test: Identify red, yellow, and green.
- Reaction test: Accelerate and brake when the signal changes.
- Depth perception: Move two sticks until they align at the same level.
- Peripheral vision test: Identify left or right side light signals without turning your head.
Theory Lesson Day
- You receive a booklet (Thai or English). It must be returned.
- Video session (approx. 5 hours 35 minutes).
- Video is in Thai with English subtitles.
- Lunch break: 11:45–13:00.
- Video continues after lunch.
Before the video finishes, part of the group is called to start the theory test.
Theory Test
- Login using your DLT ID.
- Thai nationals: national ID number
- Foreigners: Pxxx number
- Select language.
- Select test: car or motorcycle.
- If you fail or take a second category, you return the next day.

On test day:

- Balance for 10 seconds on the narrow red line.
Car Test
- Stop at the stop sign on the left (maximum 25 cm from the edge).
- Parallel park on the left between cones.
- Drive through a narrow cone alley and reverse back the same way.
License Collection
- Return documents at the counter.
- Pay fees:
- Car license: 205 THB
- Motorcycle license: 105 THB
- Receive your license.
